President Mugabe briefs Joint Operations Command members, Happyson Bongongwe (L) and Constantine Chiwenga on arrival from Egypt early July.

HARARE – President Robert Mugabe on Friday quietly left the country destined for Singapore where he was set to receive medical attention for an undisclosed ailment.

Meanwhile, it has emerged the Zimbabwean leader will not be among world leaders set to grace the grand opening on Friday of the Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Informed sources revealed Saturday that Zimbabwe’s ailing leader had left Harare on Friday evening en route for Singapore where he was scheduled to receive medical treatment.

A motorist who was forced to make way for Mugabe’s motorcade heading for the airport said the convoy was “unusually large”. Mugabe did not travel with any journalist from the state media he customarily does on his frequent travels abroad.

“He normally seeks treatment in Singapore,” said a source. “That is where he has gone to. He is coming back on Sunday morning.”

Police officers who are usually stationed at road intersections to clear the way for Mugabe’s convoy also revealed they have been placed on stand-by for the whole night between Saturday and Sunday in anticipation of Mugabe’s return.

Mugabe’s spokesperson, George Charamba could not be reached to comment on the President’s absence.

Stories and rumours around Mugabe’s allegedly poor health have been met with intense denial from his spokespersons. They routinely accuse the private media of paying unwarranted attention on Mugabe’s health.

Charamba told the Zimbabwe Times two months ago that only a medical doctor was qualified to comment on 84-year old Mugabe’s supposed illness.

“Who told you that?” Charamba said while he seethed with anger when asked to confirm information that Mugabe had flown to China to seek medical treatment. “Is that person a medical doctor? I believe only a medical doctor can confirm the President’s illness.”

Mugabe, then smarting from his shock defeat by bitter rival, Morgan Tsvangirai of the MDC on March 29, had sneaked out of the country on May 21, apparently to seek treatment in China.

In a related development, Mugabe has abandoned plans to attend this week’s opening of the Olympic Games in China.

Writing in his weekly Nathaniel Manheru column in Saturday’s Herald newspaper, Charamba revealed that Mugabe would not attend the opening of the world’s most popular sporting extravaganza.

“President Mugabe attaches great importance to the ongoing talks, which is why he is not going to China for the grand opening of the Olympics,” wrote Charamba referring to the ongoing talks in South Africa between Zanu-PF and MDC.

“Clearly, he is aware that unlike the Unity palaver with PF-Zapu in the 1980s, the current talks involve a political Minotaur shaped and disfigured by a complex web of external interests whose sole goal is to teach revolutionary Southern Africa a sound lesson by defeating Zanu-PF.”

Political analysts have warned that Mugabe risks humiliation if he flies to Beijing, where his most hostile critics will converge.

“The main reason why Mugabe would not attend such an occasion is that his status as President is being questioned not just abroad but in his own country,” said Professor Heneri Dzinotyiwei, a political analyst.

“That is why he is so anxious to see the ongoing talks succeeding as this would settle the outstanding issue of his legitimacy.”

Accusations have been leveled against Mugabe that he won last month’s election at the expense of more than 100 opposition MDC supporters who died at the hands of his militant supporters and members of the armed forces.

The poll was dismissed by the three invited African observer missions, creating a nagging crisis of legitimacy that has dragged a usually defiant Mugabe to negotiate with Tsvangirai after signing a memorandum of agreement with him.

It was inconceivable before the elections that Mugabe would ever shake the hand of Tsvangirai, let alone sit down to dinner with him.

Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has said he hopes President Robert Mugabe will make an “honourable exit” after power-sharing talks.

In an interview with Britain’s Channel 4, Mr Tsvangirai said Mr Mugabe was in denial about violence in Zimbabwe.

Government and opposition officials have been holding negotiations at a secret location in South Africa.

The talks, aimed at resolving Zimbabwe’s post-election crisis, are expected to resume on Sunday.

Mr Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) accuses Mr Mugabe and his Zanu-PF party of stealing Zimbabwe’s presidential election.

Talks, which started a week ago after Mr Mugabe and Mr Tsvangirai met for the first time in a decade, were halted earlier this [continue reading]

African Art vs American Intellectualism

By

Joseph C. Edgecombe

Introductory Statement:

African artist do not dwell on the theory or implication of aesthetics in thier artwork or sculpture. African art is more of the result of the finished product and not a message purposely implicated into the artwork in order to get a certain message across. African art and sculpture  deals more with idealistic realities and is more  emotionally involved  in the conveyance of a message not statements as American art is known for making.

The emotional impact of African art & sculpture is what makes it the outstanding type of art that it is; if you are uneducated in African arts one can easily misunderstand the meaning of African sculpture or artwork. From the point of view of the artist - how emotionally involved he is in the making of the sculpture or artwork judges the amount of success of the finished product; which eventually leads to how it is seen or perceived by the on-looker or you the person looking at the artwork for what it is worth emotionally, spiritually, aesthetically or in cash/monetarily.

The culture of a people is what shapes the artist point of view of thier work.Non-educated Americans blacks as well as whites do not know the meaning of African art-to put it in other words ...how to read it or on what context is is based .

Spoiled by American /western artwork which is complex and misleading to many with the extention of the artist . African artwork is simple (from what I have learned) in its message ,one only has to rely on his/her own personal thoughts and feelings. African art is down to earth and real by this realization the world of this art is opened where before it was closed. One finds how African art & sculpture expresses its self worth to you.

African art pronounces detailing a message to make sure one gets the idea of what the artist/sculptor intent is. American/western art does less, it does not contain that type of intent and purpose. African art is more successful where there’s no guesswork, it tells you what it wants you to know or see and how it wants you to perceive it; to elaborate on the subject of African art  - it is like a book one that   is not complicated but easily read . Through dramatization of part or objects on a sculpture or painting - it’s an information holder- similar to a dictionary.

African art is open holds no secrets unsheltered, instantaneous, forceful in its message ...at the same time innocent making the on-looker seem nieve to the subject - calling the person to get involved in the artwork by the revelation of the thoughts of the artist/sculptor. Many Americans are nieve to this way of thinking, not seeing artwork in the usual way makes one ponder in thier thoughts. through the simplicity of African art we find the breakdown of western knowledge by/of complication and not information, where the shock of the lack of  knowledge of how much they/one knows about another type of art is.

The shock of Americans or Westerners of how something simple in ascetics looks when compared to American  can be so revealing in its definition it’s amazing to one to think that black people - Africans art is not pictures and is easily educational in its process of openness that gives African art the availability of knowledge that it has come to be.

Through personal intents African artwork /Sculpture finds its economic wealth and standing.

American/Western artwork but not on the same basis is effective artwork, this is a  negative stand  because African art & sculpture has a universal , majestic and spiritual basis which can’t be measured in cash money (as much American art is judged upon) alone, which makes it personally more valuable.
